Skincare Secondary Packaging and Kitting FAQ
Data: Transport packaging testing protocols, such as those published by the International Safe Transit Association, define performance tests for packaged goods moving through distribution networks.
Judgment: Ask which transport-pack test basis the shipper is designed against when shipping into long or multi-leg distribution, because a shipper qualified for one distribution profile is not automatically qualified for another.

Data: Packaging test standards published by ASTM International cover physical performance characteristics of packaging materials and systems used for consumer goods in distribution.
Judgment: Reference a recognised test basis when specifying a shipper or tamper system, because a specification written only as a supplier's house standard cannot be compared between suppliers or defended when a damage claim arises.

Data: The European packaging framework addresses packaging design, recyclability, and waste reduction expectations for packaging placed on the European market, including consumer packaging.
Judgment: Treat material direction as part of the market-entry decision rather than a design preference, because a carton chosen for appearance alone can require a redesign when a market's packaging expectations change.

What counts as secondary packaging for skincare?
Everything that carries, protects, or presents the primary pack: folding cartons, sleeves, leaflets, labels applied after filling, shrink or tamper evidence, gift sets, and the transport shipper. It is the layer a buyer often specifies last and a supplier often prices first, which is how scope gaps appear in a quotation. Naming the layers properly before requesting a price prevents the wrong item being quoted and the missing item being discovered at assembly.
Should a skincare OEM handle kitting and assembly?
Where the kit uses components the factory already handles, yes, because assembly at one site removes double handling and a second transport leg. Assembly at the point of filling is almost always cheaper than assembly at a warehouse, since the components are already in one place and inspection happens once. Where the kit mixes items from other suppliers, confirm who owns damage during assembly and how the assembled unit is inspected before agreeing the scope.
What should a secondary packaging specification include?
Eight items: carton board and finish, print method and colour reference, approved dieline, barcode and label content, tamper or seal method, transport shipper grade, assembled-unit check criteria, and the language requirements of the destination market. Missing dieline approval is the most common cause of a carton that will not close around the filled pack, and it fails at the worst possible moment, after the print run has been produced and paid for.
Why must the dieline be approved around a filled pack?
Because the carton has to close around the real product, not around a drawing. A dieline approved from a flat file ignores the bottle's actual diameter, the cap height, and the label thickness, and a two millimetre shortfall is enough to make an entire print run unusable. Ask the supplier to assemble a physical mock-up around a filled pack and to record the approval, then hold that approval as the reference for the print run and any reorder.
How should transport packaging be specified?
By distribution profile. A shipper designed for a short regional route may not survive a multi-leg ocean journey, so ask which transport-pack test basis the shipper is designed against when the lane changes. Specify the shipper grade, the divider or tray, the pallet pattern, and the unit load stability expectation. Damaged goods are a cost that appears after the incoterm has decided who pays, and settling the shipper grade at specification stage is cheaper than arguing over a claim later.
How should the assembled unit be inspected?
Against six objective criteria any warehouse staff member can check: carton closure and retention, print and label alignment within tolerance, assembled weight within the declared range, correct leaflet and language content, tamper evidence intact and unbroken, and shipper integrity on pallet receipt. On failure, the action must be defined in advance - reject the carton lot, sort and rework, segregate the batch, quarantine the carton, do not ship, or file a claim immediately. Criteria without a defined action produce inconsistent decisions.
