What is packaging compatibility testing for skincare?
It is a system test: the final formula filled into the final pack, stored at elevated and ambient conditions, then checked for weight loss, seal integrity, dose accuracy, appearance, and interaction such as swelling, discoloration, or off-odor. A formula tested in glass and shipped in a plastic airless unit has not been compatibility-tested at all, because the pack is part of the product.
How long does a skincare packaging compatibility test take?
Plan on 12 weeks at 40 C and 75 percent relative humidity, run in parallel with stability, plus a shorter inverted and ambient check in the first two weeks. A program that starts at the pilot batch adds no calendar time; one that starts after formula approval adds roughly twelve weeks to the launch, which is the most common avoidable delay.
Which fill method works with which pack format?
Cold fill at ambient suits airless, pump, dropper, tube, and jar, but can shear fragile emulsions. Warm fill at 30 to 45 C suits jars, tubes, and some bottles, and needs cooling headspace allowance. Hot fill above 65 C needs heat-stable bottles and liners, and can warp a thin bottle shoulder. Aseptic or sterile filling runs at ambient in a controlled area for single-dose or unpreserved formats.
Which material and formula pairs fail most often?
PET with high alcohol or essential oils can craze and haze; acrylic with solvent-heavy formulas can crack; unlined aluminum with acidic formulas can corrode; and elastomer parts in pumps and bulbs can swell, drift in dose, and release extractables when they meet oils or solvents. Elastomer failures often show up as an odor change or dose drift rather than a visible defect.
Why does a pump lose dose accuracy over time?
Pump dose drift usually traces to the formula rather than the pump: a higher-viscosity emulsion, a formula that dries at the nozzle, or an incompatible elastomer in the valve can change the stroke volume over a shelf life. Verify dose accuracy at the start, midpoint, and end of a filled pack, and again after inverted storage, so drift is caught before it reaches a customer.
What should a pack failure trigger?
Five steps: isolate the failure to material, seal, or delivery rather than a general pack problem; re-test the same formula in a second pack from the shortlist; decide whether the pack or the formula is cheaper to change; re-run the compatibility test on whatever changed; and record the failure and fix in the product information file for the market.
Where should compatibility results be stored?
With the market file. Placing a cosmetic on the EU market requires a product information file and a CPNP notification describing the product and its packaging as placed on the market, so the compatibility report, pack specification, and fill record belong together in that file. A result that lives only in an email thread is a gap during inspection.
