A COA is the supplier's lot-level document stating identity, purity, assay, and contamination results for one batch of a raw material. It matters because a cosmetic brand's safety file is built from ingredient-level evidence — without a COA per lot, you cannot prove what actually went into the formula. A usable COA names the supplier lot number, the test date, the analytical method, and numerical results.

Which heavy metals should cosmetic ingredient COAs test for?
Lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury are the standard panel, with many retailer programs also setting limits on nickel and chromium. Trace metals arrive as contaminants in pigments, clays, botanicals, and mineral actives. Why is lot-level traceability important for recalls?
If one finished lot fails, traceability lets you identify which raw material lots went into it and which other finished lots share them — isolating the recall to one batch and one market. Without batch records linking raw material lots to finished lots to distribution records, a single contaminated ingredient forces a stop-sale of the whole range while every lot is tested.
